ABOUT US

Dream big, start small. Whether we are looking to better our health, lifestyle, environment or society, change can feel overwhelming. The largeness of current challenges can discourage us, even before we attempt to make change! However, it is important to keep in mind that each of us can effect positive and lasting change, by taking one small step at a time. Just as successive droplets of water can alter the shape of canyons, small actions can add up to an evolution.

Join us on our learning journey. Our family is currently living on a little less than an acre, learning to grow and make our own food and practicing a more simple lifestyle. The focus of Folkstart is to provide a space to document and share our learnings and best practices as we explore and experiment with practical ways to improve our everyday routines to positively impact our health, our communities, and environment. Being more deliberate and hands-on in practicing more sustainable approaches to eating and living can also greatly boost our confidence. Knowing how to grow, harvest and cook our own food and how to reduce resource consumption and dependence on modern amenities gives us independence, and makes us more resilient by being less reliant on fragile commercial food and energy systems in an increasingly automated world that is rendering us idle. 

Our aim is to help and inspire others to start and sustain change by taking small steps and sharing each success. To facilitate this, the topics and instructions on this site are largely organized into progressive steps, from “Simple/Quick” to “All In”, depending on how fast and far you want to go. We also welcome your questions, ideas and suggestions, and look forward to continuing a dialog as we go through this journey together.
